Get To Know JR And Why He Said Yes To Being A Model
How did you get roped into doing this, and what was your first thought when asked?
I'm not sure it was my choice. I feel like Allan Benavides and Kathie Dougherty "voluntold" me I would be participating. Happy to be a part of this great event!
Why did you say yes?
It's a great cause and we always do what we can to support the community. We give to a lot of organizations but the ones that include our youngest and oldest citizens really get to the softest place in your heart.
What is your official job title?
KVAL TV General Manager
How would you describe your job to your mother?
We connect people with content everywhere - and I'm on TV every once in a while - which is pretty cool:)
What is your favorite part of your occupation?
The stories we tell, and the people we make an impact on. We give a voice to business owners, educators, first responders, law enforcement, and medical personnel all trying to make a positive change in the community. I think it's pretty cool that we have new local stories to inform viewers on what's happening in their community every few hours.
All families are unique, tell us about yours.
I grew up in Yuba City, California with my mom and dad and two brothers. My dad was a Professional Baseball Umpire and I was able to hang out with him on the baseball field which was pretty cool. I grew up playing sports and eventually left home right after high school to become a Radio DJ in Reno, NV. My dad is no longer with us but I still travel down to Yuba City every few months to visit my mom. My brothers and I work together to make sure she knows how much we love and appreciate her.
Tell us about your personal passions, talents, and/or hobbies.
I am an unprofessional handyman! If one of my employees buys a new house - I will show up with a lawn mower! I love working around the house; building fences, gardening, helping people move furniture, and working on patching roofs. I have a lot of energy and love getting things done. Works out for everyone.
What is something that you swore you would never do as a parent before you had kids that you do now?
I don't have any children but I do manage 160 local people that I care for as I would my own children!
Who inspired you when you were growing up, and why?
My dad. He was a minor league umpire and traveling with him I fell in love with baseball and radio play by play announcers. From there a 13 year Radio Career was started when I was 16.
If you could go back and talk to your 12-year-old self, what would you say?
I would say .....JR one day people are going to start saying crazy things like "soon you will be able to carry a phone in your pocket" listen to those people and buy stock in Apple, Verizon and Microsoft.
