Get To Know Kelly And Why She Said Yes To Being A Model
How did you get roped into doing this, and what was your first thought when asked?
Melissa Koke and Amy Newport asked me to join in the fun, and they are very hard to say "no" to! I was nervous to put myself out there, but also excited. My 7 year old called it "nerv-cited".
Why did you say yes?
I attended Boys and Girls Club in my hometown as a kid and it was a great place for me and my brother at a time when our family was splitting up. I knew this was the right event to get involved locally. Plus I went last year to support a colleague and it was a blast!
What is your official job title?
Oregon Learfield IMG College - Associate General Manager
How would you describe your job to your mother?
I work with brands to connect their products and services with the excitement of the Oregon Ducks. Everything you see, hear and experience at a Duck athletics event that has a company attached to it, whether it is radio ads during games, on-field promotions, signage in Autzen Stadium, or company outings at a game, it all goes through our office.
What is your favorite part of your occupation?
I have the privilege of working in sports! Every day is different and I get to meet and work with so many interesting people.
All families are unique, tell us about yours:
Growing up, my Dad's side of the family were all in Canada and my Mom's side of the family were all in Trinidad, but my brother and I grew up in San Diego. Although I am a Duck, I am married to a lovable Beaver, Ryan. We have a 7 year old daughter, Brynn who loves dancing, soccer and basketball, and a 10 year old son, Reid who is a big Harry Potter fan, and loves to play and watch football, basketball and baseball.
Tell us about your personal passions, talents, and/or hobbies.
We are a sports family so most of our trips and outings are to watch our kids play sports, attend a Duck game, or travel to a new stadium or arena. I also really love going to see almost anything live on stage whether it is theater or a concert.
What is something that you swore you would never do as a parent before you had kids that you do now?
Before I had kids I swore I would never bribe them to make them behave. Now I prefer to call it negotiation...or positive reinforcement...
Who inspired you when you were growing up, and why?
Olympians were always a huge inspiration to me. I was struck by how young athletes competing at the Olympic level were so dedicated to their dreams and the sacrifices they would make in other areas of their lives. Growing up the Olympics were a huge deal and it was the first place I remember learning the stories of these elite athletes. It felt like you knew them.
If you could go back and talk to your 12-year-old self, what would you say?
I would tell my 12-year-old self that success is something you define for yourself. What the person next to you sees as success doesn't have to be the same for you. You get to define your goals for life - this is still what I tell my 39-year-old self!
